Central African Republic travel guide

The Central African Republic is a landlocked country close to the geographical centre of Africa, with savannah in the north and dense rainforest in the south-west along the Sangha River. Very few tourists visit and tourism infrastructure is minimal, but the Dzanga-Sangha forest is one of the best places in Africa to see forest elephants and western lowland gorillas. It suits experienced travellers on carefully organised trips; check your government's current travel advice before you plan anything.

Places worth the trip

Dzanga Bai

A large forest clearing in the Dzanga-Sangha reserve where forest elephants gather to drink and dig for minerals in the mud. From a raised viewing platform visitors can watch them along with forest buffalo, bongo antelope and many birds.

Gorilla tracking in Dzanga-Ndoki

Habituated groups of western lowland gorillas can be tracked on foot through the rainforest with local trackers, who follow trails, broken branches and sounds. The national park also protects chimpanzees and other primates.

BaAka forest culture

The BaAka people of the south-western forests are known for their deep knowledge of plants and animals and for their polyphonic singing. Respectful visits with community guides can include net hunting demonstrations and forest walks.

Bangui and the Ubangi River

The capital sits on the northern bank of the wide Ubangi River, facing the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The riverfront, markets, the Notre-Dame cathedral and the Boganda Museum, which covers the country's cultures and history, are its main points of interest.

Boali Falls

A waterfall on the Mbali River to the north-west of Bangui, most impressive in the rainy season when water pours over a wide rock face. It has long been a popular excursion from the capital.

Manovo-Gounda St Floris National Park

A vast UNESCO World Heritage site in the north, protecting savannah, wetlands and river floodplains once known for large herds of wildlife. It is on UNESCO's List of World Heritage in Danger and is not generally accessible to visitors.

Interesting facts about Central African Republic

  • Sango, one of the two official languages alongside French, is spoken across most of the country, which makes it one of the few African countries with a widely shared national African language.
  • The Dzanga-Sangha area is part of the Sangha Trinational, a UNESCO World Heritage site of rainforest shared with Cameroon and the Republic of the Congo.
  • The oral traditions of the Aka (BaAka) people, including their complex vocal polyphony, are recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
  • The Ubangi River, which forms much of the southern border, is a major tributary of the Congo River and has long been a key trade route for Bangui.
  • The country's flag combines the colours of France and pan-African colours, with a vertical red band joining them, a design chosen to symbolise unity.

Best time to visit Central African Republic

The dry season, roughly from November or December to April, is the most practical time to travel, as roads are passable and forest trails are less muddy. The rainy season brings heavy rain, particularly from around June to October, which can cut off roads in the south-west. Wildlife viewing at Dzanga Bai is possible year-round. Conditions change, so confirm timing and access with your tour organiser and check your government's travel advice before booking.

Getting around

Most visitors arrive by air at Bangui. Roads outside the capital are mostly unpaved and can become impassable in the rains, so travel to the Dzanga-Sangha area is usually organised through the reserve or a specialist operator, sometimes by light aircraft. Independent travel is difficult and not well supported; arrange transport, guides and accommodation in advance and follow the advice of local organisers.

Staying online in Central African Republic

Mobile coverage is concentrated in Bangui and some larger towns, and data speeds can be slow. Away from the main towns, and especially in the rainforest and the north, coverage is patchy or absent, and power can be intermittent. Wi-Fi is limited and mainly found in some hotels and organisations in the capital. Download offline maps and translation packs, carry a power bank, and tell people at home when you expect to be out of contact. Install an eSIM before you fly and switch it on when you land so you have data while you are in range.

Useful apps

  • Google Maps: Download offline maps of Bangui and your route before leaving, as signal is unreliable outside towns.
  • Google Translate: Download French for offline use; it helps with signs, forms and everyday conversations.
  • WhatsApp: The usual way to stay in touch with guides, drivers and organisers when you have a connection.
  • XE Currency: Convert CFA franc amounts; carry enough cash, as card acceptance is very limited.
