Montserrat travel guide

Montserrat is a small, mountainous British Overseas Territory in the Leeward Islands, south-west of Antigua. Since 1995 the Soufrière Hills volcano has reshaped the island, burying the old capital of Plymouth and leaving the south as an exclusion zone. Today it is a quiet, friendly place for hikers, divers and anyone curious about living alongside an active volcano, with limited but personal tourism facilities.

Places worth the trip

Soufrière Hills volcano

The volcano that awoke in 1995 still dominates the south of the island, its slopes scarred by pyroclastic flows. On clear days you can see steam rising from the dome from viewpoints in the north.

Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Scientists here monitor the volcano around the clock. The visitor centre explains the eruptions with film and displays, and its terrace looks across the Belham Valley towards the dome.

Plymouth and the exclusion zone

The former capital lies partly buried under volcanic ash and mudflows. Access to the exclusion zone is restricted and depends on volcanic activity; visits are only possible with authorised guides when permitted. Viewpoints such as Garibaldi Hill overlook the abandoned town.

Jack Boy Hill

A viewing area on the east of the island looking over the old airport, buried by volcanic flows, and the devastated eastern slopes of the volcano.

Rendezvous Bay

Montserrat's only white-sand beach, in the north, reached by boat or by a steep hike over the hill from Little Bay. The water is clear and good for snorkelling.

Centre Hills and the Oriole Walkway

The forested Centre Hills protect much of the island's remaining wildlife, including the Montserrat oriole, the national bird found only here. The Oriole Walkway trail is the best-known hike for spotting it.

Diving and snorkelling

The waters around the north and west coasts have reefs, rock formations and turtles, and see far fewer divers than better-known Caribbean islands. Local dive operators run trips from Little Bay.

Interesting facts about Montserrat

  • Montserrat is nicknamed the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean because many early settlers were Irish, and St Patrick's Day is a public holiday celebrated with a week-long festival.
  • Around two-thirds of the population left the island after the volcanic eruptions of the 1990s, many of them moving to the United Kingdom.
  • George Martin's AIR Studios on Montserrat recorded albums by artists such as Dire Straits, The Police and Paul McCartney before Hurricane Hugo damaged it in 1989.
  • Plymouth remains the official capital even though it has been abandoned since the 1990s; government business now takes place in the north, around Brades.
  • The Montserrat oriole lives nowhere else in the world.

Best time to visit Montserrat

The dry season from about December to April is the most pleasant time to visit, with sunny weather and calmer seas for the ferry crossing and diving. The St Patrick's festival in March is the island's busiest and most festive period, along with the end-of-year festival around Christmas and New Year. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, with the greatest risk from August to October. Volcanic activity can affect conditions at any time, so check the observatory's updates before and during your trip.

Getting around

There are no direct long-haul flights. Most visitors connect through Antigua, then take a short flight on a small aircraft to John A. Osborne Airport in the north or the ferry, which runs on a limited schedule, to Little Bay. On the island, taxis and taxi-tour drivers are the main way to get around, and they double as guides. Renting a car is possible; driving is on the left, roads are narrow and steep, and you should check local licence requirements with the rental company. All accessible areas are in the north and centre of the island.

Staying online in Montserrat

Mobile coverage is generally good in the inhabited north and centre of the island, around Brades, Little Bay and along the main roads, with 4G available. In steep valleys, on hiking trails in the Centre Hills and near the exclusion zone, coverage can be weak. Wi-Fi is offered by most guesthouses and some restaurants. Because Montserrat is small, phones on the western coast may sometimes pick up networks from nearby islands. Install an eSIM before you fly and switch it on when you land in Antigua or Montserrat.

Montserrat travel FAQs

Access to the exclusion zone, including Plymouth, is restricted and depends on the volcano's current hazard level. When permitted, authorised guides can arrange visits. Otherwise you can view the town from Garibaldi Hill and other viewpoints.
