Jamaica travel guide

Jamaica is a mountainous Caribbean island of beaches, rivers and waterfalls, the birthplace of reggae and home to a strong food culture of jerk, patties and Blue Mountain coffee. It suits beach holidays, but also travellers who want to hike, raft and explore beyond the resort strips of Montego Bay and Negril.

Places worth the trip

The Blue Mountains

Cool, misty mountains rising behind Kingston, where Blue Mountain coffee is grown. A pre-dawn hike to Blue Mountain Peak, Jamaica's highest point, rewards clear mornings with views across the island.

Kingston

The capital is the heart of Jamaican music and culture, with the Bob Marley Museum in his former home, the National Gallery of Jamaica and Devon House, a nineteenth-century mansion known for its ice cream.

Port Royal

At the tip of the Palisadoes spit near Kingston, Port Royal was once a notorious pirate base until much of it sank in an earthquake in 1692. Fort Charles and a small museum remain.

Negril

On the west coast, Seven Mile Beach has long stretches of sand and calm water, while the West End has limestone cliffs where people swim and dive into the sea and watch the sunset.

Dunn's River Falls

Near Ocho Rios, a terraced waterfall that runs straight to the sea, which visitors climb in chains holding hands with guides. Go early to avoid cruise-ship crowds.

Port Antonio

A quieter town on the lush north-east coast, close to the Blue Lagoon, Frenchman's Cove, Reach Falls and bamboo rafting on the Rio Grande.

The south coast

Treasure Beach is a laid-back fishing community, and nearby are YS Falls and Black River boat safaris to see crocodiles in the mangroves of the Great Morass.

The Luminous Lagoon

Near Falmouth, a lagoon where microorganisms glow when the water is disturbed. Night boat trips let you swim in the glowing water.

Interesting facts about Jamaica

  • Jamaica entered a bobsleigh team in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, the story behind the film Cool Runnings.
  • Reggae music of Jamaica was added to UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage in 2018.
  • The name Jamaica is generally thought to come from the Taíno word Xaymaca, meaning 'land of wood and water'.
  • Ackee and saltfish is the national dish, made with a fruit that must be properly ripened and prepared because it is toxic when unripe.
  • Jamaica gained independence from Britain in 1962 and remains a member of the Commonwealth.

Best time to visit Jamaica

The drier months, roughly mid-December to April, are the most popular, with warm, sunny weather and lower humidity; this is also when prices are highest. May to November is the wetter season, with short, heavy showers and lush landscapes, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, with the highest risk from August to October. The Blue Mountains are cooler and wetter than the coast at any time of year.

Getting around

Air-conditioned intercity coaches link Kingston, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Negril and other towns and are comfortable and reliable. Route taxis and minibuses are cheaper and used by locals, but crowded. Licensed taxis have red PP licence plates; agree the fare first. Hiring a car gives flexibility, but roads are narrow, winding and busy, and driving is on the left. Domestic flights connect Kingston and Montego Bay. Many resorts offer airport transfers.

Staying online in Jamaica

4G coverage is good in Kingston, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Negril and along the main coastal highways. Signal becomes weaker in the Blue Mountains, the Cockpit Country and other interior areas, and around some remote beaches. Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, resorts and many cafés, though it may be slow at busy times. WhatsApp is widely used to contact drivers and guides. Install an eSIM before you fly and switch it on when you land.
