Travelling to 马拉维: what to know before you go

Malawi is a narrow, landlocked country in south-east Africa, dominated by the long freshwater sweep of Lake Malawi. Lakeshore villages, highland plateaux and a growing set of well-run wildlife reserves give it a lot of variety for its size. It suits relaxed overland travel, lake time and safaris without the crowds.

Where to go

• Cape Maclear and Lake Malawi National Park. At the southern end of the lake, the world's first freshwater national park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site protecting hundreds of species of colourful cichlid fish.
• Likoma Island. An island close to the Mozambique shore of the lake, with sandy beaches, baobabs and a surprisingly large Anglican cathedral built in the early 20th century.
• Liwonde National Park. Along the Shire River in the south, Liwonde is known for river safaris among hippos, crocodiles and elephants.
• Majete Wildlife Reserve. Once emptied of large animals, Majete was restocked from the early 2000s and is now home to the Big Five.

Best time to visit

The dry season from May to October is the best time overall. May to August is cooler, with comfortable days and chilly nights in the highlands.

Staying online in 马拉维

Mobile coverage is decent in Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mzuzu and main lakeshore towns, and 4G is available in cities. In national parks, on Nyika Plateau, on Mount Mulanje and on remote stretches of the lake you may have little or no signal. Lodges often provide Wi-Fi, but it can be slow and is affected by power cuts. Download offline maps before driving. Install an eSIM before you fly and switch it on when you land, so you can contact your driver or lodge on arrival.
