How to Install and Activate a Travel eSIM
Installing an eSIM takes a couple of minutes once you know where to look. This walkthrough covers compatibility checks, installing on iPhone and Android, and the settings that prevent surprise roaming bills.
Check your phone first
Your phone needs to support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Most recent flagship and mid-range phones support eSIM, but some models sold in certain regions do not, so check your exact model with the manufacturer.
To check for an unlock, look in your phone's settings for a carrier lock or network lock status, or ask your carrier. A locked phone may install the eSIM but refuse to use it for data.
Installing on iPhone
Open Settings, go to Cellular or Mobile Data, and choose Add eSIM. Scan the QR code from your FindeSIM dashboard, or use the install link if you are on the same phone. Follow the prompts and give the line a clear label such as Travel.
When asked which line to use for mobile data, you can keep your home line for now and switch when you arrive. Leave data roaming off on the travel line until your plan instructions say otherwise.
Installing on Android
The exact menu names vary by manufacturer, but you will usually find the option under Settings, then Network and internet or Connections, then SIMs or SIM manager, then Add eSIM. Scan the QR code or enter the activation details manually.
If your phone asks to download a mobile network or carrier profile, allow it. Once installed, rename the line and set it as the data SIM when you reach your destination.
When you arrive
Switch mobile data to the travel line, then turn off data roaming on your home line so it cannot use expensive roaming data in the background. Many travel plans require data roaming to be on for the travel line itself, so follow the instructions included with your plan.
If you have no connection after a few minutes, toggle airplane mode, check that the travel line is selected for data, and confirm the access point name matches your plan details.
- Install at home over Wi-Fi, a day or two before you leave.
- Do not delete the eSIM until your trip is over; it usually cannot be reinstalled.
- Keep your QR code or install details somewhere you can find them offline.

Usually not. Most eSIM QR codes can only be installed once, so install it on the phone you will travel with.
