Travelling to 安圭拉: what to know before you go

Anguilla is a low, dry coral island in the northern Leeward Islands and a British Overseas Territory, known for its long white-sand beaches and calm turquoise water. There are no high-rise resorts or cruise-ship crowds, so it suits travellers who want quiet beaches, good food and a slow pace.

Where to go

• Shoal Bay East. A long curve of powder-white sand on the north-east coast, with a reef close to shore for snorkelling and a handful of beach bars.
• Meads Bay and Rendezvous Bay. Two of the island's best west-end beaches.
• Sandy Ground. A small village between a salt pond and the sea, and the centre of Anguilla's evening life, with live music in beach bars.
• Prickly Pear Cays. Uninhabited cays to the north-west with sandy beaches and reefs, reached by day boat from Sandy Ground.

Best time to visit

The dry season from mid-December to April has the most reliable sunshine and is the busiest and most expensive time to visit. May and June are hotter but quieter.
