Travelling to St. Kitts und Nevis: what to know before you go

Saint Kitts and Nevis is a two-island country in the Leeward Islands, with volcanic peaks, rainforest, old sugar plantations and quiet beaches. It is the smallest sovereign state in the Americas, relaxed and friendly, with a rich colonial history. It suits travellers looking for walking, history and calm beaches over big resorts.

Where to go

• Brimstone Hill Fortress. A huge eighteenth-century British fortress on a volcanic hill on St Kitts, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
• St Kitts Scenic Railway. A narrow-gauge railway built to carry sugar cane now takes visitors on a slow loop around part of the island in open-sided double-decker carriages, past villages, old sugar estates and the coast.
• Mount Liamuiga. St Kitts' dormant volcano, the highest point in the country.
• Basseterre. The capital has the Circus, a roundabout with a Victorian clock tower modelled loosely on London's Piccadilly Circus, Independence Square and colonial buildings near the cruise port.

Best time to visit

December to April is the dry season and the most popular time to visit, with sunny days and cooling trade winds. May and June are quieter and still largely dry.

Mobile coverage is generally good across both islands, with 4G in the main towns, resorts and along coastal roads. Signal can weaken on the slopes of the volcanoes, in the rainforest and in some sheltered bays. Wi-Fi is available in hotels, guesthouses and many restaurants.
