Travelling to アルゼンチン: what to know before you go

Argentina runs nearly the length of South America, from subtropical waterfalls and red Andean canyons in the north to Patagonian glaciers and the islands of Tierra del Fuego in the south. In between are vineyards, wide grasslands and Buenos Aires, one of the great cities of the continent. It suits food and wine lovers, hikers and anyone happy to cover long distances.

Where to go

• Buenos Aires. A city of grand avenues and distinct neighbourhoods: the colourful houses of La Boca, the cobbled streets and Sunday market of San Telmo, the Recoleta Cemetery's elaborate tombs and the parks and bars of Palermo.
• Iguazú Falls. Hundreds of waterfalls spread along the Iguazú river on the border with Brazil.
• Perito Moreno Glacier. Near El Calafate, this vast glacier ends in a wall of ice that regularly calves into Lago Argentino.
• El Chaltén and Fitz Roy. A small village that serves as Argentina's trekking capital, with free trails leading to lakes beneath the granite spires of Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre.

Best time to visit

Because the country is so long, the best time depends on where you go. Patagonia is best from November to March, when trails and roads are open and days are long.

Mobile coverage is good in Buenos Aires and the other cities, and along major highways. In Patagonia, the Andes and the far north it can disappear for long stretches between towns, and parts of the trekking routes around El Chaltén and the national parks have no signal.
