Travelling to ニューカレドニア: what to know before you go

New Caledonia is a French overseas collectivity in the south-west Pacific, east of Australia, made up of the long mountainous island of Grande Terre, the Loyalty Islands and the Isle of Pines. Its vast UNESCO-listed lagoon, Kanak culture and French influence make it unlike anywhere else in the region. It suits divers, snorkellers, hikers and travellers interested in Melanesian culture. Following unrest in 2024, check current conditions and your government's travel advice before you go.

Where to go

• The lagoons of New Caledonia. A barrier reef encircles much of Grande Terre, enclosing one of the largest lagoons in the world, listed by UNESCO for its reef diversity.
• Isle of Pines. South-east of Grande Terre, the island known locally as Kunié is fringed by tall columnar araucaria pines and white sand.
• Loyalty Islands. Lifou, Maré and Ouvéa are raised coral islands with cliffs, caves and beaches, where most land is held under Kanak customary tenure.
• Tjibaou Cultural Centre, Nouméa. Designed by Renzo Piano and inspired by traditional Kanak houses, the centre's tall wooden shells stand on a peninsula outside the capital.

Best time to visit

September to December is often considered the best time to visit, with warm, mostly dry weather and calm seas. January to March is the hot, humid and rainy season, when tropical cyclones can strike.

Mobile coverage is good in Nouméa and in most towns along Grande Terre's west coast, with 4G available in populated areas. On the east coast, in mountainous areas, in the far south and on parts of the Loyalty Islands and the Isle of Pines, coverage can be patchy. Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though it can be slow on the outer islands. New Caledonia is not part of the EU, so EU roaming rules do not apply. Install an eSIM before you fly and switch it on when you land.
