Travelling to サンマリノ: what to know before you go

San Marino is a tiny independent republic surrounded by Italy, perched on the slopes of Monte Titano between Emilia-Romagna and Marche. It claims to be the oldest surviving republic in the world, and its medieval towers, walls and lanes look out over the Adriatic coast. Most visitors come for a day from Rimini, but staying overnight lets you see it without the crowds.

Where to go

• The Three Towers. Guaita, Cesta and Montale stand along the ridge of Monte Titano and appear on the national flag and coat of arms.
• Historic centre of San Marino. The walled old town, listed by UNESCO together with Monte Titano, has narrow streets, gates and squares, including Piazza della Libertà with the Statue of Liberty in front of the government building.
• Palazzo Pubblico and the changing of the guard. The town hall and seat of government, rebuilt in the late nineteenth century in neo-Gothic style.
• Basilica di San Marino. A neoclassical church dedicated to the republic's founder, Saint Marinus, whose relics are kept inside.

Best time to visit

Spring and early autumn, from April to June and September to October, are the best times, with mild weather and fewer coach tours. July and August are warm and busy, with the Medieval Days festival in summer.
