Côte d'Ivoire travel guide

Côte d'Ivoire, also known as Ivory Coast, sits on the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa, with lagoons and palm-lined beaches on the coast, rainforest in the south-west and savannah in the north. Abidjan is one of West Africa's liveliest cities, known for its skyline, music and food, while the countryside holds national parks, mask traditions and colonial towns. It suits travellers interested in culture, city life and nature, with tourism facilities concentrated around Abidjan and the coast.

Places worth the trip

Abidjan

The economic capital spreads around the Ébrié Lagoon. The Plateau district has the high-rise business centre and the striking St Paul's Cathedral, Treichville and Adjamé have huge markets, and Cocody and Marcory are known for restaurants and nightlife.

Banco National Park

A patch of primary rainforest inside Abidjan's city limits, with walking trails among giant trees. Near the entrance, laundry workers known as fanicos wash clothes in the river, a sight that has become part of the city's identity.

Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, Yamoussoukro

A domed basilica modelled on St Peter's in Rome and one of the largest churches in the world, built in the political capital in the late 1980s. Its stained-glass windows are enormous, and it rises above an otherwise quiet town.

Grand-Bassam

The first colonial capital, a short drive east of Abidjan, has a historic quarter of faded colonial buildings listed by UNESCO, a national costume museum and long Atlantic beaches popular with Abidjan residents at weekends.

Assinie

A narrow strip of sand between the lagoon and the ocean, east of Grand-Bassam, with beach resorts, boat trips on the lagoon and calm water on the lagoon side. The ocean side has strong currents, so swim with care.

Man and the western mountains

A green, hilly region known for La Dent de Man, a tooth-shaped peak, waterfalls, liana bridges and the mask and stilt-dance traditions of the Dan and other peoples of the region.

Taï National Park

One of the last large areas of primary rainforest in West Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is known for research on chimpanzees, which use stones and wood to crack nuts, and also shelters pygmy hippos.

Interesting facts about Côte d'Ivoire

  • Côte d'Ivoire is the world's largest producer of cocoa beans.
  • The official capital is Yamoussoukro, but most government business, embassies and economic life are in Abidjan.
  • The chimpanzees of Taï National Park are among the best-studied in the world for their use of tools.
  • Coupé-décalé, a popular dance music style across French-speaking Africa, was created by Ivorian DJs in the early 2000s.
  • Attiéké, fermented grated cassava often served with grilled fish, is a national dish and is listed by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Best time to visit Côte d'Ivoire

The south is hot and humid year-round. The main dry season, roughly from December to March, is the most comfortable time to visit, though the dusty harmattan wind can make skies hazy in the north. The long rainy season in the south runs from about May to July, with a shorter one around October and November. The north has a single rainy season in the middle of the year. Check your government's travel advice before visiting areas near the northern borders.

Getting around

In Abidjan, orange metered taxis, shared 'woro-woro' taxis and ride-hailing apps are the usual options, and lagoon boats link some districts. Traffic can be heavy, so allow time. Intercity buses connect Abidjan with Yamoussoukro, Bouaké, Man and other towns, and the main highway north is paved. Rural roads can be rough in the rainy season. Hiring a car with a driver is common for trips to national parks and the west.

Staying online in Côte d'Ivoire

Mobile coverage is good in Abidjan and other cities, with 4G widely available, and generally reasonable along the main roads. Coverage gets patchier in rural areas, the far north and deep in the forests of the south-west. Wi-Fi is common in hotels, cafés and restaurants in Abidjan, but less so elsewhere. Download offline maps for longer road trips, install an eSIM before you fly and switch it on when you land.
