Isle of Man travel guide

The Isle of Man is a self-governing British Crown Dependency in the Irish Sea, with hills, glens, castles and heritage railways on an island small enough to cross in under an hour. It suits walkers, history and railway enthusiasts, wildlife watchers and, every year, motorcycle racing fans arriving for the TT.

Places worth the trip

The TT races

The Isle of Man TT, held from late May into early June, sees motorcycles race on closed public roads around the Mountain Course. The island is extremely busy during the fortnight, and accommodation and ferries sell out far in advance.

Snaefell Mountain Railway

An electric tramway climbs from Laxey to the summit of Snaefell, the island's highest point. On a clear day the view takes in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, often described locally as the 'view of the seven kingdoms'.

The Laxey Wheel

Built in 1854 to pump water from lead mines, the Laxey Wheel, known as Lady Isabella, is one of the largest working waterwheels in the world, and you can climb to the platform at the top.

Castletown and Castle Rushen

The former capital has one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the British Isles, along with the Old House of Keys, where the island's parliament once met, and a pretty harbour.

Peel

A west coast fishing town with the ruins of Peel Castle on St Patrick's Isle, linked by a causeway, and the House of Manannan, a museum of Manx, Celtic and Viking history. Peel is known for its sunsets and kippers.

The Calf of Man

A small island off the southern tip, reached by boat from Port St Mary or Port Erin in season. It is a bird observatory and nature reserve, with grey seals often seen around the coast.

Heritage railways

The Victorian Isle of Man Steam Railway runs from Douglas to Port Erin, the Manx Electric Railway runs along the east coast to Ramsey, and in summer horse-drawn trams travel along Douglas promenade.

Coastal walks and glens

The Raad ny Foillan coastal path loops around the island, and wooded glens such as Glen Maye and Dhoon Glen have waterfalls and shaded walks.

Interesting facts about Isle of Man

  • Tynwald, the Isle of Man's parliament, claims to be the oldest parliament in the world with an unbroken history, dating its origins to 979.
  • In 2016 the whole island was recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Region.
  • Manx cats are famous for having no tail or only a stub of one, the result of a natural genetic mutation on the island.
  • The native Manx Loaghtan sheep often have four, or even six, horns.
  • The last native speaker of Manx Gaelic died in 1974, but the language has since been revived and is taught in schools.

Best time to visit Isle of Man

May to September is the best time for walking, railways and boat trips, when most attractions and heritage railways run their full timetables. The TT fortnight in late May and early June transforms the island, so either book far ahead or avoid it if you want peace and quiet. Tynwald Day on 5 July is an open-air ceremony at St John's. Autumn and winter are quieter and windier, with some attractions closed or running reduced services.

Getting around

The island is around 50 kilometres long, so nowhere is far. The Bus Vannin network covers most towns and villages, and the heritage railways are a scenic way to travel along the coast in season. Hiring a car gives the most flexibility; note that some rural roads have no national speed limit, though local limits and conditions apply. Ferries sail from Heysham and Liverpool, and flights connect the island's airport near Castletown with UK and Irish airports.

Staying online in Isle of Man

Mobile coverage is good in Douglas, Ramsey, Peel, Castletown and most villages, with 4G widely available. Signal can be weaker in the hills, in deep glens and on parts of the coastal path. Wi-Fi is common in hotels, guesthouses and cafés. The Isle of Man is not part of the UK for mobile purposes, so some UK plans charge roaming there; check before you travel.
