Slovakia travel guide

Slovakia is a small, mountainous country in the heart of Europe, with castles on almost every hilltop, the alpine High Tatras, limestone gorges and UNESCO-listed towns and villages. Bratislava, its compact capital on the Danube, is an easy city break, while the east feels far off the usual tourist routes. It suits walkers, castle-lovers and anyone who enjoys uncrowded countryside.

Places worth the trip

Bratislava

A walkable old town with St Martin's Cathedral, where Hungarian kings were crowned, and Michael's Gate, beneath the white, four-towered Bratislava Castle. The UFO observation deck on the Danube bridge and the ruins of Devín Castle at the confluence with the Morava are nearby.

High Tatras

The highest part of the Carpathians, with granite peaks, glacial lakes and marked trails. Štrbské Pleso and Popradské Pleso are easy walks, while a cable car climbs to Lomnický štít, one of the highest peaks.

Slovak Paradise National Park

A limestone plateau cut by narrow gorges, where trails climb waterfalls by ladders, chains and metal steps. Suchá Belá and Prielom Hornádu are the best-known routes.

Spiš Castle and Levoča

Spiš Castle, one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe, sprawls across a hill in the east. Nearby Levoča's Church of St James holds the Gothic wooden altar by Master Paul, one of the tallest of its kind; both are UNESCO-listed.

Banská Štiavnica

A former silver and gold mining town set in a volcanic caldera, with Renaissance houses, two castles and old mining lakes (tajchy) to swim in. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Bardejov

A UNESCO-listed town in the north-east with a complete medieval square of Gothic and Renaissance burghers' houses. Wooden churches of the Carpathian region are found in the villages nearby.

Dobšinská Ice Cave

One of the largest ice caves in Europe, with walls of ice that remain all year, part of the UNESCO-listed caves of the Aggtelek and Slovak Karst.

Vlkolínec and Čičmany

Two traditional villages: Vlkolínec, a UNESCO-listed hamlet of log houses in the mountains, and Čičmany, whose wooden houses are painted with white geometric patterns.

Interesting facts about Slovakia

  • Bratislava is the only national capital that borders two other countries: Austria and Hungary.
  • Czechoslovakia split peacefully into the Czech Republic and Slovakia on 1 January 1993, an event known as the Velvet Divorce.
  • Slovakia has a very large number of castles and castle ruins for its size, many open to visitors.
  • The mint in Kremnica has been producing coins since the fourteenth century and is one of the oldest continuously operating mints in the world.
  • Slovakia adopted the euro in 2009.

Best time to visit Slovakia

Late May to September is the best time for hiking in the Tatras and Slovak Paradise, although July and August are the busiest in the mountains and some high trails close seasonally for nature protection. Spring and early autumn are lovely in Bratislava and the countryside. Winter is cold and snowy, good for skiing in Jasná and the Tatras, and Christmas markets in Bratislava and Košice.

Getting around

Trains connect Bratislava with Žilina, Poprad (for the Tatras) and Košice, and the main line through the mountains is scenic. Buses fill the gaps to smaller towns and villages. In the High Tatras, an electric railway links the main resorts with Poprad. Renting a car is the best way to visit castles and villages in the east; motorways require an electronic vignette, bought online. Ride-hailing apps work in Bratislava and Košice.

Staying online in Slovakia

Coverage is good in Bratislava, Košice and most towns, with 4G widely available and 5G in the cities. Signal can weaken or disappear in the mountains, in deep gorges such as those in Slovak Paradise and in remote eastern villages. Free Wi-Fi is common in cafés, restaurants and accommodation. Slovakia is in the EU, so EU visitors can usually roam as at home; others may face high charges. Install an eSIM before you fly and switch it on when you land.

Slovakia travel FAQs

Yes. The two capitals are about an hour apart by train or bus, and boats sail along the Danube between them in season. Staying overnight gives you more time for the castle and the old town.
